GMOs

GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism. GMOs are organisms that have had their genetic makeups changed in a laboratory. I started writing this article thinking there would be a lot of information about why you shouldn’t consume GMOs. What I learned, however, is that there can be so much conflicting information in the wellness world and that a lot of wellness articles do not contain much solid information. In this article I am going to talk about the pros and cons of GMOs and let you decide what is important to you.

One benefit of GMOs is that there hasn’t been any negative health risks associated with them. In the 15 years of GMO research, not one study has shown illness as a result of GMO consumption. Another benefit of GMOs is that they can make certain foods safer to eat. For example, genetically modifying foods can reduce allergens and toxins making foods like peanuts safe to eat for people with a peanut allergy. Another benefit of GMOs is that they can decrease the price of food. Some GMOs can increase crop yields which means prices are lower while more people can be fed. Genetically modifying food can also allow for the addition of necessary vitamins and minerals which can help nourish those in need. Another benefit is that genetically modifying crops can reduce the need of pesticides. GMOs also reduce the production of carbon dioxide, a chemical responsible for global warming.

A negative of GMOs is that there have been no longer study to determine long term effects of GMOs. Another negative is that genetically modifying a nontoxic element in food could create toxins potentially. Genetically modifying foods can also potentially increase allergens in foods. Another negative is that genetically modifying foods can lead to “super weeds.” So just like too much medication leads to higher toleration and stronger diseases , too much modification can lead to stronger weeds.

As shown above there are plenty of reasons to eat or not eat genetically modified foods. I recommend doing the research and choosing what makes you feel comfortable. I like the idea of eating food as it comes naturally so I plan on trying to avoid as many GMOs as possible.
